Aphrodite

“I think we should look through my dad’s office to see if we find anything helpful,” Apollo suggests.

I nod and we make our way over to the door. Apollo opens it and pushes me inside before closing it after him.

“What do you think we might find?” I ask.

“I think my dad knew that they were going to come for me. He was trying to get us out that day that they showed up but they surrounded our house. If he knew they would come, maybe there’s something here to help us. I need to look but it’ll be hard to go through everything. So will you be my support?”

“Of course I will, if you want me to just look I can?” I offer but he shakes his head no.

“Thanks Aph, but you might miss something I could catch since I knew him. I need to help.”

We set off to different parts of the room to look. I head over to a big bookcase full of both books and knickknacks. I push things around and check the titles of the books. There’s not much here but one book looks less dusty than the rest.

I pull it out and it’s a book on Greek mythology. Huh, if what Mes saw in my dream was true then this could be helpful. And I doubt it’s a coincidence that Apollo’s dad had it.

“Apollo, there’s a book on Greek mythology that looks like it was read more recently than the others,” I say.

He looks up from the filing cabinet he’s looking through and walks over. He takes it from me and skims through the pages.

“It’s annotated and highlighted,” he points out, turning the book so I can see. This part is the history of how the gods came to be and next to it is the word “children” with a question mark.

“We could see if Mes will read it and make any connections from the dream?” I suggest.

He nods setting it on the desk and turning back to the cabinet. I go through the rest of the book shelf but I don’t find anything else of interest.

Apollo has finished up with the filing cabinet and is looking at the desk like it’s a snake he’s afraid to touch. I get it, the desk is the most personal thing in here.

I give him all the time he needs and eventually he steps up to the desk and starts opening drawers. Most of them are basically empty. Full of supplies or old mail.

He looks like he’s about to give up when he throws a letter opener back down into the drawer. There’s an oddly hollow thunk when it lands and he picks it up and does it again.

“Do you think there’s something under there?” I ask.

He takes the letter opener and pries the floor of the drawer up. Under the false bottom is a bundle of papers and an envelope with Apollo’s name on top.

“Look, my dad had a secret compartment in his drawer, it’s full of papers and there’s a letter addressed to me,” Apollo says.
